Community Issues

Listed below are some of issues that your Parish Council is currently dealing with. There are many other issues, large and small, that claims our attention and we are grateful when our parishioners bring their comments and concerns to our attention.

You can bring your issues and ideas to any Council meeting, which is held on the fourth Thursday of the month. You will be listened to and we do really try to help resolve your concerns. Alternatively please contact any Councillor, email your comments or complete the enquiry form. We are here to help.

Local Plan
The first issue of the local plan provides a lot of food for thought for the residents of the Parish. Its contents include references to the A386 planned improvements, the park and ride scheme at The George Hotel and bus priority routes. Also included in the plan are changes to Darklake Lane, which would make it into a dedicated pedestrian and cycle route.

Traffic on the A386 (the only way out for residents of Woolwell) is already at saturation point particularly during the morning and afternoon rush hour and we are getting increasingly concerned at a worsening situation with theproliferation of traffic lights, added junctions and with further development at Derriford now well under way the congestion is likely to worsen.

Parking in Woolwell Road
There are two problems here. The first is the aggravation caused by the overflow parking from the CSA, which cannot contain its parking needs on site. The subsequent spill over onto the estate roads is causing some anxious comment on both safety and neighbourliness issues. There was a proposal to provide a permit parking system to alleviate this problem but it was not well received by the majority and has been put on hold for the time being.

Secondly is the congestion caused by school traffic at the start and end of the school day. It is difficult to deal with this one as the svery people we would most like to protect cause the safety concerns The provision of a pedestrian crossing has improved the situation but it would help if more parents considered the option of walking and leave the car at home.

School Transport to Tavistock College
We have identified a need but not yet a solution to this long-standing problem. It all comes down to funding at the end of the day and our County and District Councillors are continuing to press for a solution.

Proposed Call Centre
The Council is concerned with that with the current trend to close down call centres locally that this opportunity has gone. We intend to press Plymouth City Council who own this development site to re look at its plans for Tower Field and come up with another proposal which would hopefully be more attractive to developers. We badly need more employment opportunities in the area to provide for our young and developing workforce.

Council Donations to Community Projects
Unless you have been the recipient of a Local Council Grant you may not be aware that Bickleigh Parish Council does consider donations to worthy causes within the area. There have been recent donations to help Community Jubilee projects and the Council is always ready to listen to appeals for help towards planned community activities.

The Local Environment
Concious of our responsibilities to maintain and improve our environment, both urban and rural, the Parish Council takes great interest in what is happening to its open spaces and woodland. Just recently a full survey has been carried out on the trees of Roborough Green. Certain remedial work has been agreed so as to preserve its trees for the future. Our open spaces are precious and the Council is determined to look after them.
